2009 was a good year for the Alpha Adult Study Group. We covered a wide range of topics. We looked at Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life and studied his Cost of Disciple-ship. We studied the books of Matthew and Deborah, the Reformed Tradition and chose Islam in our quarterly investigation of other religious traditions. We closed out 2009 with a meaningful set of classes during the Advent season by studying Rejoice! Reflections on Four Advent Hymns.

In 2010, we will follow a pattern of Bible study and continue to have a quarterly look at other religious traditions and look at topics of modern social issues.

Schedule for 1st Quarter 2010

  • Jan 3 — How to Study a Bible Passage
  • Jan 10 — Tools for Bible Study
  • Jan 17, 24, 31 — Judaism
  • Feb 7 – Assisted Reproductive Technologies: Definitions and Moral Issues
  • Feb 14, 21, 28 — Introduction to Luke
  • Mar 7, 14, 21, 28 — Lenten season study of the Lord’s Prayer

Projects

We continue to collect items for "Care Packages" for service personnel in boxes outside our classroom. There is a list of suggested useful items posted above the boxes.

Welcome

Each week’s session materials are provided both the previous week and at the be-ginning of each class.

The Alpha class begins each Sunday at 9:15 AM. At 9 we have quiet music for those who want to spend time in contemplation prior to the discussion.
Go to our page at this website to see and discuss these topics, look over our reading list and get links to relevant resources.

All adults are welcome. Join us as we explore the Bible and its meaning for us in our lives.

Alpha Study Group Topic for January 10, 2010

The Bible is a remarkable book that presents the reader with a true paradox. A simple child with no formal theological education may read its pages with insight, understanding, and commitment. A devout scholar who has invested forty years of intensive study of language, culture, history, and theology may read its pages and feel that there is much that lies undiscovered in the text. Both descriptions are true. The Bible is a rich field upon which gold, silver, and diamonds lie glistening in the sunlight, easily available to any who would pick them up. The Bible is also a geological formation that promises to yield a rich, abundant source of energy if only time, energy, money, and ingenuity are invested in a mining endeavor whose technology is still being developed.

While not denying that one may profitably read Psalm 23, John 3:16, Acts 9, or numerous other passages without any academic preparation, this study arises from the conviction that our understanding of the Bible will always be enhanced by deeper study. We will benefit from the use of some tools of Bible study as much as a mechanic benefits from an array of specialized tools in the garage.

We will learn the purpose of various reference tools used in Bible study. We will also develop some personal competence in the use of these tools through practical Bible study exercises.
